Bear Smart is all about trying to minimize the attractants that might draw black and grizzly bears into communities in search of food rewards. Berries, carrion, and plants are well known bear foods, but did you know that bears are also attracted to bird feeders, compost, and apple trees? Together, these items can create a powerful incentive for a bear to enter areas occupied by humans. This can lead to bears that become 'repeat offenders', causing damage to property and even becoming a threat to human safety. In many cases though, it is the bear that ends up dead. The well-known phrase "a fed bear is a dead bear" is true. The good news is that simple, inexpensive steps can be taken to make life better for humans and bears in habitat that supports both. GBOP's Bear Smart program has been designed to help promote those steps by first identifying where some of the problems lie.
Although GBOP's approach to Bear Smart is not exhaustive, it does provide a starting point for trying to assess places and ways in which human-bear conflicts are caused in and around communities of the North Cascades. Grizzly bears and black bears are very similar in their desire to locate and consume high calorie food items. Therefore, our Bear Smart activities do not differentiate between the two species.
