members who helped out with the recent door drops around Skagit and Whatcom
Counties. Over the last two weeks around 650 neighbors received baggies containing
information about GBOP, Bear
Smart , and ways to become involved with the work that we are doing to
promote an increased knowledge of grizzly bears, and simple, practical tips for
living with all bears. To become involved with the GBOP Community Group, or to
help with ongoing information distribution needs, please contact Nan
Laney, or Chris Morgan. Watch this space for a

Bears making an early
appearance this year. We have had several reports of bears being out
and about in neighborhoods around the Cascades (even as early as mid-February!).
This is a critical time to ensure that non-natural attractants such as garbage,
bird seed, compost, and pet food can not be found by hungry bears. Find tips and
community-specific reports on our Bear Smart page.
Also read about identifying cubs, adults and yearlings.

Plans begin for GBOP's
Bear Smart Community Program. GBOP's Bear Smart Community Program is now
being developed for selected pilot project communities in the North Cascades.
The program will engage community members in a process that educates the public
about minimizing non-natural attractants that can bring black bears/grizzly
bears into conflict with humans. As well as the more obvious attractants such as
garbage and human food, people are sometimes surprised to hear that they also
include compost, apple trees and bird feeders. Watch this space for more
information about Bear Smart.
