  GBOP and Woodland Park Zoo

A partnership in action

Above: An impressive outcome from the first Bear Keg trial to be conducted at Woodland Park Zoo - Bob Everitt (Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife), Pam Cox (Woodland Park Zoo), and Jim Davis (GBOP) inspect the canister after retrieving it from the exhibit. Damaged, but definitely not broken! The bears had persistantly focussed on the Keg for about one hour before giving up. (Photo: Chris Morgan, GBOP).

Above: GBOP's Nan Laney (left) and Woodland Park Zoo's Harmony Frazier in front of the GBOP table at the zoo's brown bear exhibit. GBOP and Woodland Park Zoo have developed a wonderful relationship that began with support from the zoo through their 2003 grants program. The table had interest from hundreds of visitors during our Bear Awareness Week activities. (Photo: Chris Morgan, GBOP).

Above: Behind the scenes: a rare treat for GBOP staff, community members and partner organizations saw us up close and personal with the Woodland Park Zoo bears in their 'holding facility' next to the world class bear exhibit. Pam Cox, one of the zoo's bear keepers talked us through her work with the bears. (Photo: Chris Morgan, GBOP).

Above: GBOP community members, partners and staff join zoo staff inside the brown bear exhibit. An opportunity for us to provide some 'enrichment' for the bears in the form of special treats that were 'hidden' around the exhibit. This helps stimulate bears by replicating foraging behavior that is common in the wild. Of course, we wouldn't dream of doing this in the wild! (Photo: Chris Morgan, GBOP).
